What to Expect in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy in Greeley

Starting couples therapy can bring up questions before you ever sit down together. Will both of you have room to speak? What if you keep having the same argument? What if one of you feels more ready than the other?

At Catalyst Behavioral Interventions, I use emotionally focused therapy (EFT) with couples in Greeley and through telehealth for partners located in Colorado. Here is an introduction to the approach and what getting started can look like.

What is emotionally focused therapy?

EFT explores the emotional connection between partners and the interaction patterns that can leave them feeling hurt or alone. The work involves noticing what happens during difficult conversations, understanding the feelings and needs beneath those reactions, and practicing different ways to respond to each other.

For example, one partner may push for a conversation because they feel disconnected, while the other pulls away because they feel overwhelmed. Each reaction can intensify the other. In therapy, we slow that pattern down so there is more room to understand both experiences.

Start with a conversation about fit

A free 30-minute consultation gives you a place to discuss what brings you to therapy, ask questions, and explore whether working with me feels right. You do not need a polished explanation or agreement on every concern before reaching out.

We can talk about attending together, your goals, and whether in-person sessions in Greeley or online sessions from within Colorado fit your needs. The consultation is also a chance to ask practical questions about scheduling and getting started.

What happens in the first sessions?

Early sessions focus on understanding your relationship and what each of you hopes will change. We explore situations that feel difficult, how you tend to respond to each other, and moments when you feel more connected. Both partners' perspectives matter.

You might bring a recent disagreement, a feeling of distance, or a concern that is hard to put into words. We work together to identify goals and revisit them as therapy develops. Couples services at Catalyst are therapy only; I do not provide diagnostic assessments for couples.

Working with recurring arguments and emotional distance

The same disagreement can leave both partners feeling unheard, even when each is trying to get through to the other. I help you explore those moments with curiosity and make room for feelings that may be difficult to express.

The work may involve slowing a conversation, putting a concern into words, or listening to something your partner has struggled to share. It is collaborative, and you can tell me when something feels unclear or uncomfortable. The pace and goals depend on your relationship; there is no guaranteed number of sessions or outcome.

What if one partner is unsure?

It is okay to have questions about whether therapy is a good fit. A consultation can help clarify what the work involves and what each person hopes for. You can also contact me to discuss your own concerns if your partner is not ready. Individual therapy is a separate service, and we can explore an appropriate next step.
